Cells and functions of the immune system

The lymphocytes

Since our birth there are such cells in our body which give specific, active protection to our body against the different pathogens. These are the B- and T-lymphocytes deriving from the lymphoid stem cell, which are able to specifically identify the foreign materials for the body.

The cells of the immune system primarily occur in the blood and the lymphatic system, but they can be found in the whole body sporadically. Cell membrane receptors perform the identification of the antigen, this structure is the B-cell-receptor or the immunglobulin molecule in case of the B-lymphocytes, and the T-cell-receptor in case of the T-lymphocytes (see the figure). Each T- and B- lymphocyte has a unique antigen identifier receptor, which is able to identify one single epitope. The antigen bounding receptor of the B-cells - as opposed to that of the T-cells - identifies resolved structures. Bounding to the antigen receptors activates the lymphocytes to perform the so-called effector functions aiming at the destruction of the foreign materials. Due to the antigen stimulus memory cells also arise besides the activated lymphocytes being able to carry out effector tasks. These are extremely long-lived, they preserve information about the antigen for years or even during the whole life, they remember it (see:vaccination). Beyond that the primary task of the lymphocytes is to identify the structures foreign to the body, they must possess the ability to differentiate them from the own structures of the body. Such immune cells identifying the natural elements of our body as foreign parts and generating an immune response against them would be fatal to the body.

Dr. Masaru Emoto and the KAQUN water
